When the Husband’s Away…

by Mandy Weger on March 7, 2011

The wife will probably do a number of crazy/odd things.

Mike is out of town this week on business (only to Virginia, nowhere super exciting unfortunately) and while he’s gone, I find myself doing things that I normally wouldn’t do if he were around.  Don’t get me wrong, I miss him like crazy, but a small part of my brain is like this piggy:

So, to entertain myself while the love of my life isn’t home, you can usually count on me to do most of these things:

  • Sing.  Like, not just my favorite tunes or what I just heard on the radio (though there’s plenty of that).  I’ll sing at the absolute TOP of my voice…operatically.

That’s right…I’ll fat lady sing in my kitchen, in the living room, to the dogs, and I’ll even hum while I brush my teeth.  I guess I have to fill the silence somehow, right?  I’ll sing so much while Mike is away that by the end of the week, I’ve usually convinced myself that I NEED to be on American Idol and share my gift with the world.

  • I’ll eat things that don’t constitute as a meal for dinner.  I’ll have a meal of just chips and salsa at least once this week while Mike is gone.  Usually, if I have it, I’ll make a meal out of a quart of mushrooms.  Just mushrooms, nothing else.  Sometimes a couple of glasses of milk is my dinner.  If I really feel like a heavy meal, I’ll make a pot of soup one night and just eat it the rest of the week for lunch and dinner.
  • I will buy something/make something totally unhealthy that Mike would steer me away from.  Last time, I made brownies.  This time, I’m totally craving oreos.
  • I have complete conversations with the dogs.  They wag their tails at me, and that’s good enough feedback to justify telling them about my day.

This is an old picture, but look how well they’re groomed!  They’re getting groomed either this week or next week, so I’m excited about that!

  • I’ll read.  A lot.  I bought “The Hidden Reality:  Parallel Universes and the Deep Laws of the Cosmos” in anticipation of this week alone.

It’s an interesting book that aims to provide multiple theories on whether parallel universes really exist.  I don’t know a lot about quantum physics, but it’s a good read so far.

  • I’ll watch at least one Twilight film, maybe two, and since the third one is out now, I may just watch all three.

Anyone else as excited for Breaking Dawn as I am?

  • I’ll clean the house up at the last minute before Mike comes back home so he thinks I was a good wife that kept the house running smoothly in his absence.

And those are the biggest things I’ll do when I’m left home alone!  Singing is the biggest since it’s a near constant whenever I don’t have the TV on or if I’m not reading.

Do you have any weird habits that surface when your significant other is away?

Being home alone is the best! I love how you prepare yourself to eat as little as you want. I do the same thing when my husband goes away. I might have cookies (oreo’s are the best, btw) for breakfast…or dinner! Enjoy your week of freedom. :)

I totally do the singing thing too! And the dinner thing – I never eat a real meal if Corey isn’t around!!

Ha! I always talk to our cats when my husband isn’t home (especially if I’ve had a few glasses of wine!). And it’s way too much work to cook a real meal for myself, so I’ll just eat random things from the fridge too!

Oh I totally have secret single behavior too! But what’s really scary is when I forget that I’m supposed to hide it and let it out even though Sean is here. :)

I do all of those things too! Especially the singing, but I also dance. Everywhere.

And I love Twilight (thanks to Amanda) and am super excited and can’t wait for Breaking Dawn!!!

I pretty much sing whether Chris is around or not. I usually sing at the top of my voice when I’m in the shower, and sometimes I come out and find that he was sitting outside the door listening. When he’s gone though….I dance. And not like, boogy down dance, like a strange ballet/interpretational dance.
It’s so funny that you talk yourself into thinking you’re amazing, because I do the same with the dancing. If I’m left alone too long, I’ll start thinking my mom should have encouraged me to continue my dance lessons. Just because I was an awful child dancer doesn’t necessarily mean that I would have grown into an awful adult dancer….just because it’s true….Hahaha!

Haha – great post! When the hubby’s away, I order Indian food and watch copious amounts of Law & Order: SVU
