What I’ll Do on my Summer Vacation

by Mandy Weger on June 16, 2011

I haven’t had a “Summer Vacation” since my freshman year of college.  At Drexel University, we had to go to school or intern during the summers every year, so it’s been quite some time since I’ve had a summer off!  Even then, I usually had part time jobs so I could buy important things like cd’s, movies and manicures.

So, in honor of my summer vacation without a job, I put together a list of the things I’d like to try and accomplish during this period.

  1. Blog every weekday
  2. Learn and practice Spanish with Rosetta Stone and www.busuu.com
  3. Get more physically active (I’ve recently lost 10 lbs!  More on this later)
  4. Brainstorm story ideas and get back into writing fiction
  5. Try to find freelance work through www.elance.com–anyone have experience with this service?
  6. Get a nice tan
  7. Spend more time with Mom & Dad
  8. Garden my heart out & have the best looking tomatoes in town
  9. Cook more/eat out less
  10. Get my wisdom teeth out–I’ve put it off long enough
  11. Clean the house…like, Cinderella clean it
  12. Look for market research opportunities (hey, I used to make $$ in college doing this!)
  13. Groom the dogs more often
  14. Renovate some furniture we already have
  15. Go on bike rides with my new bike (more on this later, too!)
  16. Read books that I normally wouldn’t read on my Nook
  17. Get over my fear of baking bread–seriously, it’s just yeast and it takes a little time…I don’t know why I let the idea intimidate me
  18. Really plan our grocery shopping trips and don’t buy unnecessary items…we get most of our food from the farmer’s market anyway now.  I will NOT become an extreme couponer…those people gross me out and buy things they don’t need–it’s such a gross example of overconsumption in America
  19. Make the front yard look effing awesome
  20. Find organization projects around the house and tackle them with a vengeance.  (I love reorg projects so this shouldn’t be a problem)
  21. Make Pate de Fruit–something I’ve always wanted to learn how to make because I LOVE PATE DE FRUIT.
  22. But don’t make too many sweets…omg, me alone in the house + cookies/cake/brownies/sugar=bad idea
  23. Practice my photography skills…sooo many of you talented bloggers I follow are totally inspiring with your mad photo skillz
  24. Come up with creative ways to use the “back of the cupboard” items that we bought awhile ago and haven’t eaten
  25. Go see family in the Midwest

That’s all I can think of for now!  Maybe I’ll add a tab to my nav bar up top to keep this list at/add more when needed so I can remind myself of the things I’d like to do and my progress with each point.  Most of these don’t require much money, so hopefully it’ll keep me busy!

What would you do with your summer if you didn’t have to work?

I’m like you, I haven’t had a summer off since high school. And even then I had to practice sports all the time (although I would take that anyday). So, enjoy this! Your list sounds fabulous.

That sounds like a wonderful summer vacation! :) I’m enjoying mine right now, and this summer is actually the first summer in several years that I’m not working full time and/or taking classes, so it’s been really nice!

That’s a great list! :) I haven’t had a summer off since early on in high school – I was always working or taking classes or interning somewhere. I miss having summers off! I especially like 19 – “Make the front yard look effing awesome.” :)

Oh man, your list sounds like so much fun. I wish I could have the summer off!! Sounds like you have a plan to stay busy, which is really great – if you run out of stuff to do, you could always go visit (bee) friends!! ;)

That sounds effing amazing. I’d probably paint more if I had the time. I think you should add “practice my Spanish with Jess” and learn to make shrimp wontons. Both things I can help with! Lol
