Keeping Clean

by Mandy Weger on July 22, 2011

My mother is like, the best cleaner in the world. Her house is spotless. You could eat off the floor. She enlisted my sister and I as slaves helpers when we were kids, and our work was often inspected (mine rarely stacked up to her standards).

I was never great about keeping things clean, though. My room had clothes everywhere, my drawers would overflow with carelessly tossed in shirts my mother had worked so hard to iron. I always assumed that when I grew up, I’d magically inherit this cleaning skill my mother has and executes with such precision.

Guess what? It didn’t happen. I have my own household to run now, and I can tell you with absolute certainty that I am NOT my mother in the way I run my household cleaning schedule. Sorry, Mom…it just isn’t gonna happen. I often feel bad about this, because I really do try to keep things tidy and clean, but every time I pick up a toilet brush, I feel like I’d rather stab myself in the eye.

I’m not being melodramatic about it or anything, either. I absolutely can’t STAND cleaning and equate it to some of the worst torture you could put me through. (Organizing things, on the other hand, I adore.)

Adding to the issue of simply hating to clean, my dogs make sure to keep the floors constantly dirty as they track in dirt and dust in their wiry, velcro-like fur. It makes the house very very dusty–I could probably dust once a day and it still wouldn’t be enough.

Mike is actually a much better cleaner than I am–at least, he soldiers up and does it without as much complaining and melodramatic sighs. Still…things could look a little nicer around here.

I’ve been toying with the idea of hiring someone to do weekly cleaning. I’ve never had any experience with this though, as my mom was freakin’ superwoman when it came to this stuff.

Doesn’t she look like Superwoman?? Hahaha sorry Mom, please don’t kill me.

Here she is, looking lovely with her slaves children a few years ago

Does anyone know how it works? Any good service recommendations? Do I have to leave the house when they come? On second thought, I’d probably prefer to not be in the house when they’re here since I think I’d die of embarrassment to sit at my computer while someone literally does the dirty work for me.

Also, any ideas about how much it costs? I suppose I need to just start calling people, but again, the sense of shame and embarrassment that I can’t clean my own house is kind of overwhelming. I guess embarrassed, but with a clean house is better than nothing. Please tell me that I’m not the only one who has such trouble keeping things spotless! What are your cleaning habits?

I am a little obsessive about keeping my house clean, haha. My dogs shed like crazy and the hair all over the place makes me lose my mind, so I have to clean pretty often! My sister has a cleaning service come either once a week or once every other week, and they love it! It’s nice because they’ll do the really deep cleaning for you, and you can just worry about keeping the house straightened the rest of the time.

I’ve never used a cleaning service before because I’m a little Monica Gellar-ish when it comes to keeping our house clean. The reason? I live in constant fear that someone will drop by and our house will be dirty. Does this happen often? No. It’s one of my lovely “quirks” as my husband likes to call them. ;)

I get my house cleaned once a month. I don’t mind doing the little stuff, but I abhors cleaning bathrooms and floors. So they come in and do the whole house for me. I pay around $80 for my 3 bed/2 bath home but it would be a little cheaper if they came more often. It is worth every penny to me!

Oh, and yes you leave the house while they clean. Since I have a dog, we just go to the dog park and/or Petsmart to hang out while they clean – it only takes about 1.5-2 hours.

I don’t mind cleaning at all. I usually like it, actually. But, I feel like I just don’t have the time to keep the house as clean as I would really like it to be. Actually, that’s not true. I technically do have the time, but I don’t have the energy or desire to do as much deep-cleaning as I would really like. I just don’t want to devote several hours every weekend to scrubbing things, you know? My husband & I do well with keeping a general level of “surface clean,” but I am totally going to hire cleaners to come once or twice a month and do all the real scrubbing and mopping and dusting and whatnot that I feel like I can never quite stay on top of. I’m really excited about it, actually!

I’m totally with you on this one. Kind of. Ha! I don’t mind cleaning, if I have the time. Our schedule is so packed everyday that we cherish the time to sleep over the time to clean. I too am interested in hiring a “maid service”, but not sure where to start!

We have a cleaning service that comes once every 3 weeks, and it’s $90 for the whole house (4 bd, 2.5 baths). It’s so worth it! I am horrible at keeping things clean.

Oh and they have a key to the house and come when we’re at work. We trust them, they’ve cleaned G’s parents’ house for over 10 yrs.

I actually did inherit my mom’s CLEAN ALL THE THINGS genes, but I can’t keep up with it without losing my sanity. With other things that are more important to do (school, work), and not wanting to spend the free time I have doing cleaning, plus having cats… it’s just such an endless hole of cleaning. Then I read this…
    http://blogs.forbes.com/work-in-progress/2011/06/27/the-woman-entrepreneurs-dilemma-why-its-time-to-stop-cleaning-your-own-house/

And I thought about it. My mom doesn’t work, and she still has trouble keeping her house as clean as she prefers. I do work, and I go to school, yet for some reason I continue to try to hold myself to the same standard. So I asked a friend in a similar circumstance to mine, and she echoed what the woman said in the Forbes article–hiring a maid was the best decision she ever made. She is going to give me her maid’s information; she told me that the person comes to her house every 2 weeks and cleans the furniture, floors, dusts, etc (basically, they will do whatever you ask them to do), and it costs $65 each time. That sounds worth it to me.
