Chatterbox

So, yesterday, I went to the dentist to pick up my brand-spankin’ new mouthguard since I grind my teeth like crazy every night and my old one warped to the point of being unwearable.

And I get fitted for my mouthguard, and it’s weird and different, but whatever, I’ll get used to it.

As I’m leaving, the Dental Tech hands me a little bag and tells me what it is, but I wasn’t paying attention. I put the little bag in my purse and forgot about it the rest of the day.

Well, when I open up the little bag, what do I see?

My teeth.

Seriously?? I have a mold of my teeth now, complete with a chipped front tooth (that’s just the impression…my tooth isn’t really chipped).

I mean, my first thought is use it as a Halloween decoration, but I’m wondering if I’m supposed to actually do something with this. Like…keep it until I’m old so I can get dentures made to look exactly like them?

I don’t really want to keep these around that long. I don’t think my house has room for plaster molds of my body parts.

So. Creepy.

What do I do with this?? What would you do with this??

That is kind of creepy! I have no idea what you could possibly do with it (or what the dentist would expect you to do with it?!), except like you said, halloween. Maybe stick it in a pumpkin?

I agree, a Halloween decoration is probably the only thing I could think of.  I had molds done when I had braces then a retainer but I don’t remember getting to keep them.

Lol I love the chipped tooth. I think you should use it for Halloween and just keep it with your decorations.

I’ve had LOTS of dental and orthodontial work done in my life, and I’ve never been sent home with a mold. I don’t think you really NEED it for anything. He/she probably saw it was chipped and thought, “I can either throw this away or give it to the patient…”

So I vote you definitely need to use this as an awesome Halloween decoration! So fantastically creepy, lol. I might just drop the mold into a bowl of candy or set it in a giant orange jello mold!

OMG! Do you think it might be for if you need a new mouthgard while you’re abroad–like they could mold it from that or something? I might actually call my dentist and ask for a polite reminder of why I was given a fake set of my own teeth. That’s soooo weird!!

when i got fitted for my mouthguard they gave me back the mold too.  But my technician told me it’s because they don’t want to keep them (lack of storage) and that if you even needed to make another mouthguard it would be cheaper since you already have the mold. Obviously yours wouldn’t work since your mold has chips, but that’s what I was told!!  It is super creepy though!!

This is too funny/creepy/awesome. It would definitely make an.. interesting.. Halloween decoration. Or you could pack it in a box and forget about it and then be totally spooked when it gets opened 10 years down the line!

I’ve gotten a lot of dental work done over the years and I’ve never been sent home with a mold either! I have no idea what I’d do with it — probably just keep it in a drawer somewhere and throw it out after a few years. But I agree that it would make a fantastically creepy Halloween decoration!

Ha!  That’s so hilarious!  I’ve never gotten an impression of my teeth before.  I say go for the Halloween thing!

That would totally creep me out!  No thank you to THAT.  You can go ahead and take that to Spain, because if I accidentally come across it in your house….just….creepy. Hahahaha!

I had a bunch, but eventually threw them away. Although it was fun to see what my teeth looked like before braces (and more than a little scary). I always assumed I got to take them home because my dad is my dentist, I didn’t realize they send them home with everyone!
I agree that it would be much simpler to get a new mouthguard made if you already have the impression, and are sure your teeth haven’t moved. You might even be able to use one of the standard sport-store drop-in-boiling-water-then-stick-in-your-mouth ones and end up with a better mold and less burns. :)

I got a mold of my teeth from my orthodontist back in the day! They told me to put it in my sock drawer, where it won’t get bumped around (they’re not very sturdy), and in case you need a replacement retainer/mouth guard/etc it can be done cheaper/quicker.

It’s kind of an odd place to keep it, but I’ve never lost it!

This is an old post, but I recently got bleaching trays done and they gave me the mold- they said to keep the trays on the mold when I’m not using them- apparently it helps them keep the shape more and the material helps to absorb water after rinsing them which is better for the tray?  Perhaps they want you to keep your guard on there when you’re not using it.
