Mike and Mandy’s Winterurlaub 2011!!!

by Mandy Weger on December 2, 2011

I’ve kept something very exciting from you guys…Mike and I are going on a winter vacation tomorrow and will be gone for 10 days!

Where are we going, you ask?

  • Flying from Santiago to Milan
  • Driving from Milan to Innsbruck, Austria
  • Innsbruck to Salzburg, Austria
  • Salzburch to Munich, Germany
  • Munich to the Neuschwanstein Castle
  • The Neuschwanstein Castle to Liechtenstein
  • Liechtenstein back to the airport near Milan
  • Flying back to Santiago, Spain

Crazy, right?? We’re so excited for this trip!

Some things we plan on doing:

Go Christmas shopping around the Christmas markets:

Perhaps go on a Sound of Music tour??

Visit the Neuschwanstein Castle (aka: the castle that inspired the Disney Castle):

AND EAT!!

Mike lined up quite a few impressive restaurants for us to visit, including:

Tantris: A 2-Star Michelin Restaurant near Munich

Terrine: a 1-Star Michelin Restaurant near Munich (and yes, I do believe those are shaved black truffles in the above photo

Carpe Diem, Finest Finger Food: a 1-Star Michelin Restaurant in Salzburg, Austria

And lastly, the one I’m looking forward to the most:

Ikaru: a 1-Star Michelin Restaurant in Salzburg, Austria. Ikaru is unique in that it does not have a single chef heading the restaurant. Rather, every month it invites guest chefs from around the world to plan and cook their own menu that month. When we are going to be here, the chefs are from Sao Paulo, Brazil. Their menu looks incredible.

I think it’s safe to say that the most exciting thing about travel to us is getting to eat and taste a bit of the best around the world. I’m not sure how our travel style will change once kids enter the picture, but for now we’re going to live it up by doing as much of this kind of stuff as we can. We’re also going bonkers over the thought of pretty Christmas markets nestled in the mountains. Talk about picturesque!

So while we’re gone, posting may be a bit infrequent, but I’ll still try to write when I can. Have any of you been to these cities? Any suggestions on where we might want to go?

Hasta Luego! Ciao! Auf Wiedersehen! See ya!

I have been to Munich but it was in summer so I spent my time lounging outside which I do not think would be advisable this time of year! It was a really interesting city though with some great old building with some creepy carvings that I found fascinating!!

Have fun though and make sure to drink glogg, mulled wine, and eat lots of yummy Christmas treats!!

I’ve visited Neuschwanstein, Munich, and Innsbruck, and you are going to have a FANTASTIC time.  I’m so jealous, and what a fun way to kick off the holiday season!  Can’t wait to hear all about it!

What fun! Take lots of pictures; since I’ve never been to any of those places except Milan (but would like to go), I am most interested to see what they look like.

Oh, wow!  I hope you guys have a great time!!  I’ve never been to those cities, but my husband went to Germany after he graduated from high school back in the day.  The restaurant selections look amazing, but I got giddy over the possible Sound of Music tour and the Neuschwanstein Castle!

I have been to Munich, Neuschwanstein, and Salzburg, and you are going to have a great time.  Definitely do the Sound of Music tour.  We had a blast.  I wish I had bought some of the hand carved wood items that are available near Neuschwanstein and in Salzburg, and not waited to buy something in Munich where they weren’t as nice. Salzburg is very walkable and there are good recommended walking paths in probably any good guidebook.  The biergartens in Munich are out of this world, and the Deutches Museum there was also great.  Also the place where people surf on a standing wave in a canal right in the middle of the city (maybe not so many people will be doing this in the winter though!).  Have fun!

Oh my, your vacation sounds ABSOLUTELY divine!!! (Must set aside the green-eyed monster here..) And a “The Sound of Music” tour? I didn’t even know such a thing existed — you must come back and blog all about it when you return!

I got engaged in Salzburg, so it holds a very special place in my heart! Salzburg is just a beautiful city, and the Sound of Music tour will help you hit the big spots. And I’ve been to Neuschwanstein twice! As a big Disney fan, I totally saw the inspiration. I’ve never been in the wintertime, but it looks beautiful in pictures with snow and lights. Definitely, try to hike up to “Mary’s bridge” (I think) to see the castle from the bridge. That’s how you’ll get a full shot. You can’t take pictures inside, but that’s good because you can focus on all of King Ludwig’s ornate details. Have fun! And your meal plan looks delicious!

You have to promise me to sing “The Hills are Alive” while you spin around in a circle when you’re in Austria.  Do it. lol
